Our 'Can I? Should I? Must I?' programme of training is a series of four seminars offered by Celtic Knot in conjunction with the British Association of Social Workers (BASW).

When? What? Who? How? Who for? Why?

When?

Providing services under compulsion - 7th May 2008
Sharing information - 11th June 2008
Rationing Resources - 2nd July 2008
Charging for Services - 10th September 2008

Each seminar runs from 10.00am - 4.00pm. Lunch will be provided.

What?

The seminars will aim to provide concrete answers which:
  • Recognise and address that there will be occasions both when you will wish to do these things (“Can I?”) and will wish not to (“Must I?”);
  • Are informed by legislation, case-law, human rights, statutory guidance and professional ethics;
  • Will provide a framework for legal and ethical practice.
More information about the subject matter of each seminar can be found [here].

Who?

The seminar leader is Allan Norman, Principal Social Worker and Solicitor at Celtic Knot. Allan is:
  • an experienced training over nearly two decades, whose feedback regularly commends his innovation, memorability, expertise and passion for his subject;
  • a specialist practitioner in the law of social work;
  • a visiting lecturer at three universities;
  • a member of BASWs Standards and Ethics Board;
  • a registered social worker and a practising solicitor.
How?

Allan takes four areas of particular controversy in social work practice, and subjects them to analysis in a structured way that means that participants should emerge from the seminars with:
  • a tool for approaching and addressing professional, legal and ethical dilemmas that can be more generally applied;
  • knowledge of stautory and practical guidance, law and Codes of Practice, that are relevant to each specific area being examined;
  • hard copy and electronic resources to take away;
  • a sense of achievement and affirmation of their positive social work practice;
  • a PRTL certificate!
The seminars use a mix of learning methods. Neither flipcharts nor formal lecturing feature at all! But interactive exercises that draw out existing knowledge and test developing knowledge do. Allan is not merely a facilitator: he will be actively seeking to deliver the course materials. Participants are not merely recipients: they will be contributing to the developing agenda and solutions.

Who for?

These seminars are aimed at social work practitioners.

Why?

Some social work practitioners will be aware that these seminars meet their assessed learning needs. But we know that it is all too easy:
  • for social workers to feel de-skilled in the face of the procedures that drive their day-to-day practice; or
  • to be too overwhelmed by work to update their practice; or
  • to misread the significance of the law and guidance that is being put before them; or
  • to find it difficult to set aside the time to explore best practice with other colleagues and practitioners.
These seminars are for you too!
